PIGBLUP Requirements

PIGBLUP performs complex computer intensive calculations. There are some minimum requirements for the specification of a computer for use with PIGBLUP, however with the exception of the use of an Intel chip, most entry-level PCs would comfortably exceed these specifications. PIGBLUP is not a piggery recording/management system but is dependent upon reliable data recording procedures, compatible herd management software is a requirement for the use of PIGBLUP.

Processor

Version 5.10 requires an IBM Compatible Personal Computer with one of the following Intel Processors:

PIGBLUP should only be used on a PC that has an Intel Processor. Despite claims of 100% compatibility, problems have arisen with computers using processors from other manufacturers. These problems were overcome by replacing the processor with an Intel processor.

Operating System

Your computer should be running one of the following Microsoft operating systems:

Graphics Card

VGA or upwards compatible graphics card.

Memory and Disk Space

This is dependent upon the size and structure of your data set. Version 5.00 and above require a minimum of 100 MB of free disk space for installation and running. As a result of PIGBLUP using virtual memory when necessary, this disk space requirement will increase for large data sets.

Data

Data for input into PIGBLUP are required in a standard format. There are currently four variations on the basic PIGBLUP format, details of which are in Section 9 (page 9-1). PIGBLUP compatible herd recording systems exist that will automatically extract PIGBLUP data into the correct format, examples of these can be found on the PIGBLUP web pages.
