The Genetic Audit module is designed to give you
feedback on the effectiveness of your long term breeding program. The Genetic
Audit has several components including:
The Audit Genetic Trend option shows you the average breeding value of the breed in the audit year compared to the average value of the previous 5 years, as demonstrated in the screen below, taken from PIGBLUP.
The Selection Intensity option shows you how many animals have been selected (have had progeny in the herd) in proportion to the total number of animals that have been tested in the audit year.
In the table above, selection intensity is higher on the male side than on the female side (less males selected than females), as would be expected. The breeder has increased his/her selection intensity for sows in 1994 relative to the average value of the previous 5 years, while the boar selection intensity has remained relatively constant.
The screen below shows the differences in the EBVs of the selected animals versus all tested animals and also the maximum difference that theoretically could have been achieved if the previous displayed selection intensity is applied to the single trait.
In the table above, max SD gives the maximum genetic selection differential that would have been achieved if the proportion selected in the previous screen had been selected for that trait alone. For example, in gilts, the average value of the 4% selected in 1994 (previous figure) for ADG was 8g/d higher than the average of all the tested gilts in 1994. If the breeder had selected the 4% of gilts with the highest ADG EBVs in that year the average ADG of the selected gilts would have been 73.05g/d higher than the average of the group of all tested gilts for 1994. The breeder is unlikely to ever achieve this value but it does indicate the maximum theoretical selection intensity.
The table shown in the screen for "Selection Differentials (Std Deviations) below, carries on from the previous table by converting the previous units (g/d, mm, pig, $) into a common unit, standard deviations. You can now compare the traits with their distance from the means for each trait to gauge the effectiveness of the breeding program.
The Audit Litters option gives you further information (other than EBVs) about your current breed over the last 7 years including:
