Peter Wahinya is a post-doctoral research fellow at AGBU, specialising in applying genetics to enhance livestock productivity. His current work focuses on understanding the drivers of lifetime productivity in Merino sheep and overseeing routine sire evaluation for the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association. Peter is also passionate about developing innovative, practical tools for breeders to optimise genetic gain and productivity in livestock systems.
Peter completed his PhD in quantitative genetics, where he developed breeding strategies to improve dairy cattle genetics under diverse production systems in developing countries. His research has expanded to include projects on the genetic control of methane emissions and resilience in sheep and the genetic evaluation of admixed dairy, beef, and sheep populations. Through his work, Peter aims to bridge the gap between research and practical application, helping breeders achieve sustainable and profitable outcomes.
